  • Week #6 30 Seconds to Mars - This is War Selected by Marcus Overall Score: 7.2 ______________________________________________________________________________ Marcus’s Review: Creativity/Artistry: 6Talent/Instrument Skill: 6Structure/ Composition: 7Replayability: 7Growth/ Maturity: 7 Average: 6.4 Comment: I fully believe that bands are in a tough situation when it comes to sophomore releases. The band is often bored with the songs they have, the listeners want more of the same but nothing too different. It seems to me that bands need to grow along with and in the same direction as their listeners and in the rare case when that parallel occurs, you get some amazing connections with albums. This is an example of when that didn’t happen for me. This album is very much a good extension of A Beautiful Lie. Unfortunately, I’m kind of over it. His voice has awesome tone, yet the whining, half yelled vocals are starting to get on my nerves. Some of these song ideas were better done when they were performed by Angels and Airwaves but they are still well arranged. Not sure why the similarity jumps out at me, but it’s there. Maybe it is because they both have a song called “A Call to Arms”. Instruments are slightly above average. Might give it a few listens but doubt its staying power in my library.
